It has been such a long time since I have read through the millennium
development goals. I read through each one again today and the two that
resonated with me today are the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger and
the need to promote gender equality and empower women. It is so funny how we
sometimes lose sight of those values which are important to us.
I was having a conversation with a colleague about the MDG’s
and mentioned how passionate I felt about the need to empower women and he
asked a very ‘male’ question. “Who has been oppressing you?” By you, he meant
women. This brought up a vast number of responses brimming to the top of my
lips. But I kept quiet. Why? Not because I accepted that women were accorded
equal rights to men in every way possible, but because I realized that while
society and indeed the other gender have a role in the lack of equality, we
also have a say. I have a say. I can let society determine who I am or I can
step up and give society a reason to reflect. A reason to look upon itself and
find faults in its actions. A reason for society to wake up and embrace all
genders blindly. Openly. Freely.
Today is a reminder for me that women have rights. Period.
It is also a reminder to remember who we are and to let that knowledge guide
our actions.
My hope has always been that this blog will become a
platform for sharing bits and pieces of information with women looking to
create something from the lives, and the gifts that they are given. It’s so
amazing how many women out there are blind to their potential, value and
purpose. Sometimes all we need is a spark to light up our lives. It is my hope
that we can be that spark for you.
